Bone Grafting
What is bone graft?
At Lakeside Oral Surgery, there is two kinds of bone grafting that we use- XenoGraft and AlloGraft.
- XenoGraft is methodically processed from bovine bone, extensively tested and provides a favorable environment for new bone growth. We typically use this kind of bone around implants, in sinus lifts, and in certain large areas of bone grafting.

AlloGraft is 100% derived from donor bone. It’s the trusted bone regeneration solution most similar to a patient’s own bone that provides a strong start and greater confidence for successful bone regeneration.
Why is bone grafting needed?
Missing teeth often results in poor quality and quantity of bone suitable for the placement of dental implants as well as long-term shifting of remaining teeth and changed to facial structure
The best time to have bone grafting done is at the time of tooth extraction. This gives the tooth the best chance at “accepting” the bone graft and long term success.
Bone Graft at Time of Tooth Extraction
After the tooth has been extracted and the site has been thoroughly cleaned, Xenograft or Allograft bone is placed in the site and then a collagen membrane is stitched into place over the bone grafting to hold it in place while it heals.
Oftentimes, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) treatment is used along with the bone grafting to improve your bodies natural ability to heal, re-grow new healthy bone, and decrease infection risk. The PRF is mixed with the bone graft and placed in the site. An additional membrane can also be made from the PRF to cover the site.
The newly placed bone graft will need to heal for about 4 to 6 months before an implant can be placed.
Bone Grafting After Tooth Extraction
If a tooth, or several teeth, have been missing for some time and the bone has started to atrophy, a ridge augmentation may be necessary to build back enough bone for implants. A ridge augmentation is a common dental procedure often performed following a tooth extraction. This procedure helps recreate the natural contour of the gums and jaw that may have been lost due to bone loss from tooth extraction, or for another reason.

This week I completed the 1st phase of getting dental implants at Lakeside. The entire experience was very positive. The office is professional, beautiful, impeccable and smartly laid out. The staff made my wife and me totally comfortable in every way and everything was explained so well. Every "t" was crossed and every "i" was dotted. It is obvious that each member of the team is well versed in what they do. Dr. Haynie is a high caliber professional and super nice. This is my second time coming to see Dr. Haynie I needed to have a bone graft and will be going back for an implant in 4 months. the first time I was there it was a great experience I always get scared when I know I’m gonna have any kind of dental surgery I guess that’s normal but the staff and Dr. Haynie made me feel very comfortable and I was put at ease right away, he’s the best so is his staff My neighbor was able to take me and wait for me and she said she was very impressed with Dr. Haynie and his staff. I had to had a bad infection and needed 3 back teeth pulled as well as 2 skin grafts done. I was referred to Lake side by me doctor. From the time I made the appointment on a Friday they got me in on next Tuesday. I was in allot of pain and was very glad the jumped on it to help me asap. I have never been treated by any business or medical professional as well as the people at Lake side oral. I had my surgery yesterday 6-17-20 and it went so great, they even care about your spouse and have set up their practice to make sure she was well informed during the surgery and have gone so far as to have a massage chair in the theater room for her to wait in. They worked with me on the cost and understood that unexpected things come up when life happens. I want to give special thanks to Kinsey, Venessa and Kara for treating me like family. I have had 5 back surgery's and 3 heart surgery's in the last 6 years due to falling off a roof so I have seen many doctors and surgeons but doctor Haynie is way above the rest the way he treated me.
