With IVS, you’ll be in a state of deep relaxation, with minimal awareness of the procedure, while still being responsive to verbal cues if needed. 

Other Sedation Options

Intravenous Sedation (IVS) is a safe and effective method for many patients, but there are certain conditions and circumstances where it might not be the best option. You may not be eligible for IVS if you have certain medical conditions, are pregnant, have allergies or reactions, or have a history of substance abuse. Alternative options include: 

• Local anesthesia– Involves injecting a numbing agent directly into the area to be treated. While local anesthesia is always used in combination with the other anesthesia options, it may also be used on it’s own in certain cases. With this option, patients will be aware of their surroundings but won’t feel pain.
• Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)- Nitrous oxide is a gas that is inhaled through a mask places over the nose, It helps to induce  a state of relaxation and reduces anxiety. With this option, patients will still be conscious and aware of what is happening, but will be more relaxed. 
• Oral Sedation- Often used for young patients in combination with IVS, a sedative medication in pill form is taken prior to the procedure. It helps to relax the patient and can make the IV injection more bearable.
