Dental Implants: Changing Lives

Dental implants have revolutionized the way that we treat missing teeth. Dental implants are anchored in the jaw, making them just as strong as your natural teeth. This means that you can eat anything you want, and don’t have to worry about your teeth slipping when you talk, eat, and laugh. Dental implants allow you to live your life to the fullest.

About Dental Implants

Dental implants are small titanium screws that are inserted into the jaw, and onto which a natural-looking crown is placed. Titanium has the unique capability to bond with the bone in a process called “osseointegration.” This makes them function just as a normal tooth would.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Natural looking
  • No dietary restrictions
  • Last a lifetime
  • Fixed – won’t slip or fall out
  • Protect the jaw from resorption

Dental Implants Procedure

The dental implant process begins with imaging, an exam, and a consultation to determine your wishes and needs. If it is necessary to build up the jawbone, grafting is performed a few months prior to surgery. Then, we will perform dental implant surgery in our office. The procedure itself takes about an hour. Then the implant is left to heal for a few months while osseointegration takes place. After the implant has fused with the bone, we attach an abutment (connector) to the implant and you can then return to your dentist for a custom fabricated crown.

What are dental implants?

A natural tooth consists of a root and a crown. If you compare natural teeth to implant-supported replacement teeth, you’ll see they have the same basic parts. Both have a crown (the visible part used to chew food). Both have a root that holds the tooth securely under the gum and is anchored into the jaw. The difference is that the implant is made of titanium – the same time-tested material used by surgeons for artificial joints. When you lose a tooth, you lose both the root and the crown. To replace the tooth, the surgeon first replaces the root with a small dental implant. Please view our After Implant Placement FAQ page for more answers to your questions.

Time is allowed for bone to heal and grow around the dental implant. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. A support post (abutment) is then placed on the implant and a new replacement tooth (crown) is placed on top of the abutment. In many cases, a temporary replacement tooth can be attached to the implant immediately after it is placed. If all of your teeth are missing, a variety of treatment options are available to support the replacement teeth.

A smiling elderly man

“Don’t be afraid to Smile.”

For years I’d felt like a part of my body was missing — because my teeth were. My dentist told me that dental implants would make me feel and look a lot better. OK, I said. Now, I’m thrilled. I can smile, eat anything, and enjoy a good laugh with my friends.

Surgical Advances in Dental Implants

Using the most recent advances in dental implant technology, Dr. Haynie is able to place single-stage implants. These implants do not require a second procedure to uncover them but do require a minimum of six weeks of healing time before artificial teeth are placed. There are even situations where the implant can be placed at the same time as the tooth extraction – further minimizing your number of surgical procedures.

Dental implant placement is a team effort between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a restorative dentist. Dr. Haynie performs the actual implant surgery, initial tooth extractions, and bone grafting if necessary. The restorative dentist (your dentist) fits and makes the permanent prosthesis. Your dentist will also make any temporary prosthesis needed during the implant process.

I have been a patient of Dr. Haynie's for two procedures and was very pleased with not only the professional and courteous service given by his staff but the way you are treated as a patient. From the front desk to the nurses and Dr. Haynie himself everything about the procedure was explained in detail to make you feel at ease. Dr. Haynie even took time to meet with my wife regarding the procedure and the after care. I highly recommend Lake Side Oral Surgery to anyone needing oral surgery.

Patient Review

My experience with Dr. Haynie and his staff has been top notch. Dr. Haynie took time to explain in detail what he was going to do to put my implants in. He explained in a way I could understand. Then he personally called me that night after the surgery to see how I was doing. That meant alot to me. His staff is also top notch! They always have a smile on their faces. They answered all my questions and made me feel very comfortable. They were very professional as well as friendly. We had questions concerning our insurance coverage and they listened and even checked and double-checked what our share of the costs would be. I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Haynie and his awesome staff to anybody who needs oral surgery. I am very glad I went to them and if I need oral surgery again I will definitely go back to them. Big Thank You to all of them. PS: When you leave, you'll have a smile on your face.

Exceptional Treatment! I had another wonderful experience with Dr. Haynie and staff. His skills as an oral surgeon are exceptional. He should be commended on his ability to assemble and work with such a competent team of staff members. Brooke and Lexi greeted me warmly at the front desk for each my recent appointments. Laura, MeagAnn, and Joesey took excellent care of me before, during, and after my surgery. They did such a good job of answering my many questions and making me feel comfortable! Dr. Haynie called me the afternoon of my surgery to see how I was doing and ask if I had any questions. He and his staff go the extra mile to show they truly care about my well-being!

Patient Review

My name is Rich and I’m 71 yrs old. I haven’t written many reviews, to slow on the computer. My dentist Dr Willis in Bonner’s Ferry recommended Lakeside Oral surgery. I went to a consultation with Dr Haynie a week ago to the Sandpoint clinic, that experience was awesome. Everything was explained to me by a young lady that was beyond awesome. Then l met Dr Haynie and he looked at me, and the explained again what needed to be done. Since l wanted to have the work done sooner l went to his Coeur d alene office to get a bridge cut, a tooth pulled and sinuses checked. Well from the time l got there to the time l left, l was completely satisfied with the info, the work and especially the staff . The young ladies that assist the Dr are plain awesome , even the girl that wheeled me out to the car was so nice and helpful. PS Thank you Dr Haynie for calling me up that night to see how l was doing.

Patient Review from Roberta T

I had to have a tooth pulled and a dental implant installed. A first for me and I was very nervous about the procedure. Dr Haynie and the staff spent over an hour with me on two occasions to make sure I understood everything before the procedure was scheduled. At the last minute I got nervous again and Lacy took a big part of her morning showing and explaining everything to me again. The staff in this office all work together and everyone was so kind and helpful to me. Dr Haynie listened to my concerns about anesthesia and did exactly as he said he would. The procedure was over quickly and was painless. I got pain pills and took them that day after the Novocain wore off. The next morning I awoke with no pain whatsoever. It was amazing. I just had my followup two-week apt and everything is fine. It was so easy I now wonder why I was so worried. Dr Haynie does know dentistry and his specialties very well and he and his staff "listen" and answer concerns. That is unusual. It was a piece of cake for me. Thank you Dr Haynie and Staff. It is with pleasure I recommend all of you very highly.
